Karen Hibbard - Démarche artistique (2007) *english to the right

Karen Hibbard détient une maîtrise en Art imprimés (« Print media ») de l’université Concordia (2000). Elle a été artiste membre de la coopérative d’arts imprimés Open Studio (Toronto) pendant plus de 10 ans et y a siégé au Conseil d’administration pendant 2 ans. Elle a également été membre du Conseil d’administration du Studio XX, une coopérative féministe d’arts médiatiques, de 2004 à 2006. Elle est actuellement artiste membre de l’Atelier Graff (Montréal).


Elle a été récipiendaire d’une bourse du Conseil des arts et des lettres du Québec en 2005-2006 pour la production de son projet Le fétiche / Fetish. L’objectif de ce projet est de transcender l’apparente banalité des arts ménagers par leur fétichisation, en leur infusant une dose de magie. Ce travail de Karen Hibbard présente l’environnement domestique sous un angle inédit. Par la transposition vers le théâtral de l’espace domestique s’opère une remise en question du stéréotype de « lieu de passivité » qui y est rattaché. Karen Hibbard travaille actuellement sur le projet Étirer ma peau sur la ville / Stretching my skin over the city – une approche poétique du processus de vieillissement. Ce processus y est considéré en tant que succession de phénomènes générateurs d’émerveillement plutôt que de peur. On y est invité à voir son propre corps comme un paysage soumis à une continuelle transformation.


Karen Hibbard prévoit amorcer ensuite son travail sur le projet Toys 4 Toys, qui abordera notamment la négociation entre les « partenaires » d’un processus de « jeu ».


La démarche artistique de Karen Hibbard commente et réinterprète les consensus sociaux, souvent sous l’angle humoristique. Son œuvre aborde les questions du vieillissement, des rôles sexuels et des rapports entre l’individu et la collectivité. Son travail comporte toutes sortes de désaccords qui constituent une voie d’accès privilégiée à son sens même.


Karen Hibbard intègre les arts imprimés aux arts médiatiques, souvent sous forme d’installations « print media ».
Au Québec, elle a participé au Mois de l’art imprimé et elle a fait partie de plusieurs expositions d’art imprimé, notamment à la Galerie Graff et au Stewart Hall Museum. En 2006, elle a été lauréate du Prix d’excellence de la 7ième édition de la Biennale L’art et le Papier VII, organisée par la Galerie Jean-Claude-Bergeron.
Son œuvre fait partie intégrante de nombreuses collections, notamment celles de la Banque Nationale du Canada et de Loto Québec. Son travail a été exposé à Tokyo, à New-York et à travers le Canada (Alberta, Ontario, Québec et Terre-Neuve).

  

Artist Statement for Karen Hibbard- 2007


Karen Hibbard obtained her Masters in Print media at the University of Concordia (2000). She was an artist member with the print cooperative, Open Studio (Toronto), for 10 years. Currently, she is an artist member at Atelier Graff (Montréal). In addition, she was on the Board of Directors at Studio XX, a feminist cooperative of media artists from 2004-2006.

She received a C.A.L.Q. grant in 2005 / 2006 to produce: “Le fétiche/fetish”. The objective was to imbue the ordinary with an air of magic by fetishizing it. Please visit the website <www.karenhibbard.com/feticheweb/>. By transforming the domestic into the fantastical, the stereotype of it as passive is challenged. Please note: she’s in the midst of adjusting the website to work with different platforms. It works well in Explorer 5.2 on MAC.

Concurrently, she worked on the web project:“Étirer ma peau sur la ville / Stretching my skin over the city”- a poetic look at the process of aging. Here the aging process is looked upon as a succession of astonishing phenomena. The viewer is encouraged to compare change in their bodies to that of the constantly fluctuating landscape.

At the moment, she is working on “Toys 4 toys”. It sheds light on our consumerist attitude towards play. What is our engagement with these things and/or persons and how do we negotiate the terms. Here the toys are demanding pleasure. After all those who provide pleasure also require it. This is an uneasy look at how we may unconsciously or consciously suppress others’ needs in the myopic pursuit of our own.This series continues an engagement with issues of role-playing using absurdity to highlight the underlying mechanics.


Her work comments upon and reinterprets society’s views. She has an interest in issues of aging, gender roles and community. Looking for discrepancies within the work is a key to understanding its meaning.


Combining printmaking with media arts, she often makes print media installations.

She has been active with the “Month of Printmaking’ in Québec and shown prints in
several group shows, including; Galerie Graff and Stewart Hall Museum (may, 2006). She won Le prix d’excellence at the Biennale de l’Art et le Papier VII organized by Galerie Jean-Claude-Bergeron (Ottawa-june, 2006). There is a catalogue available through the gallery.
Her work is in numerous collections, such as; La Banque Nationale du Canada and Loto-Québec. She has shown work in Tokyo, New York as well as throughout Canada (Alberta, Ontario, Québec, and Newfoundland).
